A c1890 former cotton spinning mill photographed across its surviving lodge (cooling pond). There are warning notices around the lodge to say that the water isn't merely cold - it's freezing cold. Lodge is well understood to mean a mill cooling pond in the textile districts but causes confusion elsewhere. On Coronation Street when a mill site was being redeveloped Pat Phelan was pulling bodies out of the lake - presumably this term was adopted so as not to confuse southerners.
