There had been an ironworks on this site on the banks of the River Leven from 1685, the first in the north of England, and it flourished from 1869 when the railway reached the area. It ceased operations in the 1960s, but the ironworks site (including the first few houses to the left of the photo, but not the ones to the right) is a scheduled ancient monument (SAM 1007084).
