Stamford Baths, 16 Bath Row, Stamford

Grade II Listed Bath House of 1823. To the north is a possible changing room, and to the east is accommodation for the baths attendant. The first floor rooms also have barrel-vaulted plaster ceilings. The building was extended to the rear in the late 19th century. A public bath had originally been established here in 1722 by four local surgeons. The present building was built by the Marquis of Exeter (Cecil Brownlow 1795-1867?) and possibly a design by William Legg. Stamford Conservation Area Appraisal claims a date for the building of 1772. I find it hard to dispute the datestone in the south wall but it is possible 1823 is the date of the extension? The costs were 2s 6d for a hot bath and 1s for a cold one according to a history of health care in Stamford but they don't say when, presumably in the 1820s.
