Originally the Star Brewery, based behind The Star public house, which itself was founded in 1708. The brewery was bought by Edward Ind in 1799; the company was joined by the Coope family in 1845 becoming Ind Coope (now Allied Breweries). The company founded a second brewery in Burton-on-Trent in 1856, but brewing continued with Romford Brewery finally closing in 1993. When I was a child Romford was frequently perfumed by the strong smell of malted barley and hops (though this ceased a long time before 1993 with the introduction of more "modern" brewing processes).
