An ancient form of signal where the red board is rotated through 90 degrees. As seen in the photograph, it is parallel to the track indicating that the line is clear. Location is approximate only - photo was taken from a canal boat and in 1970 I didn't keep very accurate records! (Photo is scanned from an Agfa 35mm colour slide and has been corrected in 'Photoshop' for a colour cast.)
