1980s style pillar box by Machan Engineering of Falkirk, a business which closed in 2015. This one is on the pavement outside the sorting office, an arrangement that became common at the end of the 20th century, when the Post Office no longer wanted members of the public wandering through post office yards to use the wall boxes previously mounted in sorting offices. The change was inspired partly by the increased vehicle movements, and partly by the then-common threat of minor terrorist attack.
