Lych (or many other variant spellings) is an Old English word for corpse. Here the deceased would have been brought to the church to await a freshly-dug grave, but in that time the coffin would have been held here at the gate. All Saints is fairly unusual in that there is a stone table still extant. See Image] for the opposite view.
