The house at Chatelherault was designed by William Adam, and built between 1732 and 1744 for the Duke of Hamilton. It served as a summer house and hunting lodge, with stables, kennels and banqueting rooms, and takes its name from a French dukedom which was conferred on the Hamilton family in 1550. The house was restored in the 1980s and now forms the centrepiece of the Chatelherault Country Park.
