Rowlands Methodist Church, Summerseat

Rowlands Methodist Church is situated on Rowlands Road, adjacent to Summerseat Methodist Primary School. It was founded before 1826 as a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, which can be seen marked on the OS map of 1850-51 (https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/379554/414794/10/101393 Old Maps). The Wesleyan Methodist church was formed in the 18th century from religious societies founded by John Wesley and his preachers and was the largest Nonconformist denomination in the 19th century. In 1932 the Wesleyan Methodists joined with the Primitive Methodists and the United Methodists to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain. The old church building was replaced in 2005 by the current Methodist Church which was built next to the primary school. The stonework of the church has weathered somewhat since it was new (Image] – taken in September 2005) but still contrasts with that of the school which was opened in 1863 by the Methodist mill owner, John Robinson Kay, to serve the children of the mill working community (https://bit.ly/3oZ1RVY Summerseat Methodist School).
