The Dining Room. Situated on a bend of the River Avon, the original wooden motte-and-bailey castle of 1068 was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century. The defences were strengthened during the 14th century and it was used as a stronghold until 1604 when it was converted it to a country house. The castle was owned by the Greville family (who became Earls of Warwick in 1759) until 1978. Now operated as a theme park by Merlin Entertainments. The castle is listed, grade I, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1364805 The grounds of the castle amounting to almost 700 acres (280 hectares) comprise of about 57 acres (23 hectares) of gardens and pleasure grounds, and some 635 acres (257 hectares) of parkland. The grounds are on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, grade I, and there is much history and detail at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1000386
