Watling Street was the Roman Road that went from Dover to Wroxeter via London, partially following an ancient trackway between settlements at what are now Canterbury and St Albans. On the day several hours of persistent rain have forced the road surface water run off to flood into this layby. Markyate Cell is beyond the trees to the left.
