Now standing isolated, this dressed limestone column supported a narrow gauge elevated tramway or tubway leading from the shaft top of Grievson Pit No. 1 iron ore mine to the south of Urswick Road to the mine waste heap on the opposite side of the road. The high quality of the masonry is surprising bearing in mind the lowly function of the column. There is no trace now of either Grievson Pit or the waste heap it served (The nearby tips in the field were most probably associated with Pinder Ring Pit).
