The water from the weir either goes straight on or veers sharply to the left to bypass the island, which is where all the trees on the right of the picture are. Intriguingly, on the online biggest-scale OS map the short steep hill behind camera, leading to the back of the grounds of a couple of houses on the main road through Mid Calder, is named as Craigshill. The area of Livingston directly across the river from here is called Craigshill. Before what we now know as Livingston was built in the 1960s, there was a farm there called Craigs, a very common farm name, but there is no mention of a Craigshill on either side of the river. Perhaps Craigshill is misnamed place?!
