As far as I can make out, the high ground behind was the ash disposal for Staythorpe Power Station, hence the need to sample run-off water. Update: My thanks to Adam Danylac for the following information: "... this stream used to enter a culvert near the sewage works that ran underneath the landfill (a great idea, right?!) so the sample was to pick up any contamination from this. The stream has since been diverted around the landfill. Water is still sampled here though to find contamination at different point around the landfill.".
