Neither a stile nor a gate, more a controlled gap in the fence line allowing pedestrian to pass through and to continue along the public footpath. As the roundel on the left suggests, it is intended to prevent cyclists going any further. The footpath forms part of the 'Tyne & Wear Heritage Way', an 80 mile route taking in the rich historic and industrial heritage of the area. The way is broken down into nine convenient sections that can be walked at any time, and in any order.
