The white half of the semi-detached pair is where he wrote 'War of the Worlds' among others, in a very productive period 1895-1896, after which he moved. At that time this pair of houses were the only ones on this end of the road. Then, his house would have looked like the right-hand half of the pair, apparently untouched by 'improvement'. The house to the left was built next, after which the whole area was greatly developed. Maybury Road is one-sided, the houses facing the railway. not a very peaceful location for a writer. In 'War of the Worlds' the Narrator lived in this area, not here, but somewhere up Maybury Hill, probably where H.G. would have liked to have lived.
