The aqueduct is part of the Glasgow branch of the canal, between Hamiltonhill and Port Dundas. The original aqueduct was built in 1790, and is just to the right (northwest) of the current one (hidden by trees). It was quite low in height, and about 1880 the current one was built, so it could allow the passage of horse-drawn trams underneath.
