This photo, taken from Branch Road to the north, shows the mills in their rural context. They originated as a water-powered fulling mill in the early 18C. The five-storey steam-powered spinning mill was built c.1864 and the weaving shed c.1882. This is unusual in that the roofs are symmetrical rather than the usual saw-tooth shape. The towers contained privies. The houses nearby were built for the mill-workers.
