Henry Fedden was a prominent Bristol businessman who formed a committee to provide a land-based facility for the boys who were on board H.M.S. Formidable. The latter had been bought from the Royal Navy where it had been moored at Chatham to guard the Thames, but was becoming obsolete. However, it was moored off Portishead and given over to boys from impoverished or offending backgrounds. That school at sea operated from 1870 until 1906. With conditions onboard becoming deplorable, the committee managed to raise £30,000 funds to build this magnificent institution in 1906, designed by Edward Gabriel; the boys moved ashore immediately. And so it served until 1983, whereupon the school closed and has become a gated residence. Grade II listed.
