The memorial has a number of different elements. In the centre it recalls the units based here in WW2 between November 1943 to July 1945, especially to those who gave their lives. It names the two fighter groups: Three squadrons of the USAAF 358th Fighter Group of 66th Fighter Wing arrived at Leiston on 29 November 1943 after completing training at RAF Goxhill. They were replaced by the 357th Fighter Group, who arrived at Leiston from RAF Raydon on 31 January 1944. The station closed in 1955. The lower central panel bears the outline of the airfield runways and perimeter track.
