B-17 Fortress, 42-97594 Dry Gulcher of 381BG, at USAAF Ridgewell, crashed near here shortly after take-off to bomb Peenemunde, on the 04/08/1944. The only casualty was Tail Gunner; S/Sgt. Harold E. NORRIS. All the surviving crew returned to duty Pilot; Lt. George Hanley Cuppernall, + Co-pilot; Capt. Irving Moore, + Navigator; Russ Radley, + Bombardier; Lt. Chas Young, + Flight engineer/TT Gunner; T/Sgt. Earl Yankton, + Radio Operator; T/Sgt. Frank Heinze, Snr. + Observer; Capt. Francis Hawkins, + Waist Gunner; S/Sgt. Loren Murphy, + Waist Gunner; Lt. Jim Sneed.
