The positions are approximate as it was 8 years ago and things may have moved. Nonetheless, this is a picture worth sharing as No. 18000 is a very important prototype locomotive, albeit without its original machinery. This was a prototype mainline gas turbine locomotive built for British Railways by Brown, Boveri & Cie in 1949. It developed 2500 horsepower and could run at 90 mph. However it was troublesome and thirsty and was withdrawn from service in 1960. It was then used abroad as an experimental engine but no longer with the gas turbine. It was repatriated for preservation in the early 1990s.
