The Heathfield Estate, at the top of Gravel Hill, was owned by Raymond Riesco and acquired by Croydon Council in 1964. In the 40 years that Mr Riesco owned the land, he changed it from a run-down farm to model estate set around a mansion and beautiful ornamental gardens. The gardens and woodland are open to the public, the house is not. The estate extends to 18 acres (7.28 hectares).
