Commemorative Milestone in Westgate Square, Newport

This modern milestone is part of the In Their Footsteps art project, which remembered the march of the Chartists across South Wales in November 1839. Primarily the Chartists were demanding the right to vote in parliamentary elections, however, the protests were met with violence which resulted in about 22 deaths. Inscription reads:- : TO / DOWNING / STREET / 145 MILES :
