The building is grade II listed (list entry 1272757) and the listing explains the name: it was originally a herder's house, possibly replacing two earlier cottages, and became an inn in 1860, although named on older maps as the Oldham Arms, reverting in later years to the Herders Inn. There are several photos on this website of this pub after it had closed, sometime before 2005, though none when it was still open. Since the last one in 2016 Image it appears to have had several improvements including new windows, and was on the market in 2020. A public footpath crosses the car park.
