Found on the outer wall near the gate is a plaque in memory of the crew of Lancaster R5672 which crashed close to this spot 8th April 1944 with the loss of all nine on board. Adjacent to the disused RAF Caistor airfield, the plaque remembers the crew of 1 LFS (Lancaster Flying School) Lancaster R5672 which crashed 08/04/1944 Airborne from Hemswell on an air test, crashed at approx 1700 having been seen diving steeply from approx 1000 feet. Destruction was so great that the cause of the accident was not ascertainable by the investigators. Given the non-aircrew status of 5 of those on board, it must be assumed that they were groundcrew who had been invited along on the flight as a 'jolly'. Noteworthy are the rank of the pilot and the presence onboard of an ATA pilot. Pilot, Wng Cdr., Eric Frank Knowles CAMPLING, DSO, DFC, age 23 Ground crew; LAC., Ronald Percy FREER, age 22 Ground crew; AC2. George Valentine KILLICK, age 29 Ground crew; AC1., Thomas KING, age 24 Ground crew; AC1., Harold QUINTON, age 34 Flt Eng., Sgt., Lancelot Thomas REGAN, age 20 Ground crew; AC1., Alfred Henry SPILLER, age 19 Ground crew; AC1., Edward Roland STEVENTON, age 20 Passenger (Pilot) 2nd Off., Taniya WHITTALL, age 24 https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6513910
