The museum opened in 1992 to celebrate the local area's mining culture. The museum abruptly closed in 2015, with the cleared site remaining as a neglected ruin ever since. As has previously happened to the surrounding areas, it is intended to developed with a conventional housing estate, but the Snibston Colliery buildings and Century Theatre will remain.
