The closest building in red and buff with a black and silver exhaust stack houses the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. This is a device that uses a strong magnetic field to produce images rather than any form of ionising radiation. The exhaust stack carries a warning notice of the risks of asphyxiation and cold burns. This is because it is the emergency vent from the liquid helium that keeps the magnet cool enough to be superconducting. In a dire emergency the magnet is killed by venting the helium as it is the only way to turn off the field.
