This Anglican church opened in 1962 at the heart of a new council estate, designed by architect Francis Johnson. In 1968 the lighter coloured building to the left was erected as the worship space, replacing the old St John's chapel on Tong Street (which has since been demolished), and the original building to the right became the church hall.
