The Mound was originally just a spoil heap of material excavated to form the lakes in the park. It was then landscaped with an 'octagonal ziggurat' on top. Becoming overgrown and falling into obscurity, it was covered in 1979 with further demolition material, and in the 1980s planted with roses as seen in Image As part of the park's restoration in 2012, the 1970s material was removed to get back to the original conical form of the mound, pathways restored and a new 23m flagpole added. (Concise paraphrase of the interpretation board on site).
