Stanhope Drive, Horsforth

An attractive suburban street lined with what I presume are lime trees. A local correspondent writes: "Stanhope Drive is an important part of Horsforth history, it contains the first council houses that were built in Horsforth. They were intended for local soldiers who had fought in the first world war. And the lime trees were planted as a memorial to soldiers (and others) who had died in the war, one tree for each person. Each tree originally had a small metal plaque fixed in the ground by the tree, with the name of the person ... I think some were taken to Horsforth village museum, and I suspect some are kept in the houses for safe keeping. The Armistice day parade normally comes along Stanhope Drive, and a poppy on a wooden cross is placed by each tree."
