There are two locks on the Coventry Canal at Glascote, about 150 metres apart, together raising the water by 13ft 8in (4·2 metres). This is the chamber of the top lock. All locks have white painted cill markers on the stones by the gate, together with a notice to keep forward of the markers. In this image, the cill (or sill!) is clearly seen. Boats descending the lock MUST keep forward of this, to avoid the boat stern catching on it as the water drains away. Mismanaging the operation can result in the front of the boat dipping into the water, the boat then being in danger of flooding rapidly and even sinking. For boat crews navigating up the locks, this issue does not occur.
