Because this boundary surrounds the rear garden of a house in Chestnut Way it was never subject to the open plan part of the estate design. It has been variously fenced and hedged and now has a brand new fence of some quality. The capping boards above the feather-edge seem to me to be a fairly recent innovation. I have a fence with one that is a decade old, and I don't recall them before that.
