Safeway, Hale

Safeway supermarket in Hale was built in the 1970s. It was quite controverstial at the time. To build it required the demolition of the old council buildings and drill hall in the village, and many locals were concerned that the coming of a supermarket would lead to the demise of many local small shops. Safeway closed in 2005, since when it has been a Somerfield, a Co-op, and is currently Marks and Spencer. Photographed by the contributor's aunt, Mrs Rona L. Atkin on a wet day sometime before 1998.
