Following the A259 at descends into a dip in the former chalk sea cliffs known as Copperas Gap from the 17th to the later 19th century. A small settlement grew up around the crossroads including cottages an inn. When Shoreham Harbour was opened in the 1850s the settlement grew rapidly providing workers for the gas works on the southern side of The Canal. In 1897 the settlement was officially renamed as Portslade-By-Sea having unofficially been called since the 1860s. The large block on the left was a purpose built factory opened in 1957 by lingerie makers Kayser Bondor. The firm was taken over by Courtaulds in 1966 and the factory closed in 1972 as it struggled to compete with cheaper underwear produced in the Far East.
