The ponds in Norton Heath were the result of gravel extraction. The noticeboard says in 1913 Miss Ellen Willmot https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Willmott (of Warley Place Brentwood) https://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=115012881&page=1) wrote the area was a "happy hunting ground for botanists" The heath is now secondary woodland since grazing stopped, it is recorded as a local wildlife site
