These piers are all that remain of a 110 metre-long railway viaduct which was built in 1858-60 to carry the Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway over the River Clyde. The line was subsequently acquired by the Caledonian Railway in 1861, with the line extended to Peebles in 1864, and eventually closed by 1966 (having closed to passengers in 1950).
