Sand and gravel was excavated from Upper College Farm between 1954 and 1979. Since then controversial tipping has taken place with rubble, concrete, brick and other inert materials dumped and which has raised the level, apart from at the western end, by some 20 feet. Grasses and wild flowers have taken over and the area is used for informal recreation.
