Approximately where the nearest circular rough patch is on the lawn. When the Aire & Calder Navigation opened to Wakefield in 1702 there were four locks on the Calder - Penbank, Lake, Kirkthorpe and Wakefield. Lake Lock was at an angle to the main course of the river, at the northern end of a long narrow island. In 1807 this lock was replaced by one at the northern end of Lake Lock depot, about 150 metres away, but also called Lake Lock.
