This is a very rare example of a largely unspoilt in situ single cylinder beam engine that was back-up to a waterwheel in a candlewick factory. The engine is of circa 1835 vintage. The cylinder is probably a later replacement by J & E Arnfield of New Mills and is 18" x 52" with a simple slide valve. It has a single flitch cast iron beam and a cruciform section cast iron connecting rod. A classical 'Watt' conical pendulum governor operates a throttle valve. The beam entablature is supported by a single fluted cast iron column. The site is privately owned and there is no casual access.
