On 8 May 1945 Britain and its Allies formally accepted Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender after almost six years of war. A similar day, known as Victory Day, is held on 9 May in several former Soviet countries including Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. WW2 cost more than 50 million lives, of whom an estimated 25 million were Soviet military. The UK observes Victory in Europe (VE) Day on 8 May each year. It is not normally a bank holiday in the UK, but in 2020 the date of the Early May Bank Holiday was moved to 8 May as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations. This year's celebrations were, however limited due to the lockdown prompted by the coronavirus pandemic, meaning that there were no large-scale street parties or parades.
