The exposed layer at the bottom of the trenches is the surface of the Roman Road between Dorchester and Badbury Rings. This was in use from the late 1st century to at least the 4th century CE. The excavations are within the area later classified as a Scheduled Monument. https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1015351 .
