This footpath leads from Murton Lane to Shiremoor and was shown on the first Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map of the area published in 1865. It leaves Murton Lane via a narrow gate next to the property known as 'Moorlands'. At the time of the 1865 map the area at this point was known as 'Philadelphia', a settlement which can be traced back to at least 1828 when it was recorded as a colliery village in Murton township.
