Tillietudlem (pronounced tilly-toodle-um) is a rather twee pseudo-Scots name concocted by Sir Walter Scott. The fictional Tillietudlem Castle featured in Scott's 1816 novel 'Old Mortality' and it came to be believed that it was based on nearby Craignethan Castle. When the railway came to this area, a halt nearby was named Tillietudlem, and this name came to be attached to the cluster of nearby houses.
