The stonework is part of one of the piers of the former Nethan Viaduct, on the Coalburn branch of the Caledonian Railway - closed in 1953. The viaduct was built in 1856, rebuilt and modified in 1862, and finally demolished in 1955. This small remnant is accessible from a path on the Upper Nethan Gorge Nature Reserve. https://www.railscot.co.uk/locations/N/Nethan_Viaduct/
