Hillworth Park [11]

Hillworth House is seen from the park. Now privately owned apartments, the house was built in 1832 replacing an earlier house some 100 yards to the east. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1249812 There is a view of the front of the house at Image Hillworth Park was originally the gardens of Hillworth House. The house was rebuilt in 1832. The house and estate of some 27 acres was purchased by the Council of the Borough of Devizes in 1945 and the house became apartments. Much of the estate was sold for development and the remaining area of almost 5 acres is the present park. The basic layout of the paths remains as shown on a plan of 1842. There is a detailed history of the house and gardens at: devizesheritage.co.uk/Gazetteer.pdf The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.
