http://www.harpurshopping-bedford.co.uk/index_main.html The façade seen here was originally the front of Bedford Modern School, designed by Edward Blore. The rest of the school buildings were demolished in the 1970's and replaced by the Harpur Centre. In the mid 1960's the room above the tower entrance was used for teaching French, and there was reputedly a ghost in the room above.
