Signpost on the Thurstaston to Oldfield footpath indicating The Dungeon, a steep sided, wooded valley in which a small stream flows westerly into the Dee Estuary. As a child I was quite disappointed that there was no dank, dark hole, in fact the name Dungeon is probably derived from the Old English Dunge or Denge, meaning land of, or next to, the marsh.
