A unique vertical duplex winding engine built in 1873 by R J & E Coupe of the Worsley Mesnes Ironworks, Wigan. This is the fourth level of the five level engine house and houses the lower part of the 18' diameter winding drum. The cylinders are 36" x 72" stroke and fitted with Cornish drop valves. The red parts are the post brakes and operating levers that were applied by weights and released by a steam engine with a water damped cataract cylinder. The brakes are lined with wood.
