Low Railway Bridge over the Culmaily Burn, Sutherland

This low bridge carries the still operative far north railway line over the Culmaily Burn (watercourse) near Golspie, Scottish Highlands. The metal plate affixed to the bridge indicates that it is maintained by Network Rail, who are responsible for maintaining the British rail network. This stream appears to be an artificially straightened watercourse, with attendant problems of aggradation (deposition of cobbles and sediment in the river bed). It is evident from the amount of alluvial material that appears to have been dredged and deposited on the banks that stream under the low railway bridge must be at risk of choking up from time to time.
